Wow...it's been a banner four weeks of natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunami, mudslides) Makes you wonder when we're going to get our big earthquake or tsunami we've been hearing about for years. Being in the Cascadia Subduction zone

The earth is going through a period of instability as is my work place. About 70 people were laid off this week from various depts in our larger org. They were basically automated out of a job. We don't typically experience layoffs here so it was a big shock to everyone and a wake up call to a lot of people.
Makes you think about how much you spend, could you get by on one income, medical benefits...and then of all the people that work so hard here. Who live to work instead of work to live. There are murmurs in the hallway regarding company loyalty, good performers being cut, no stability for employees anymore, having to keep increasing your skills so you are marketable and as indispensable as anyone can be.
It's been a sad 2005 indeed.
